Thomas Kavanagh

Augustus R. Street Professor of French, Chair

Thomas M. Kavanagh received his B.S. from Holy Cross College and his Ph.D. from Yale University. Before coming to Yale, he taught at the University of California Berkeley, the University of Michigan, the University of Colorado and the State University of New York at Buffalo.

His work focuses on eighteenth-century literature and culture, chance and esthetics, narrative and its social implications as well as French cinema. His recent publications include: Enlightened Pleasures: Eighteenth-Century France and the New Epicureanism (Yale, 2010) and Dice, Cards, Wheels: A Different History of French Culture (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2006).
