Sherwin Nuland

Sherwin B. Nuland, MD has retired from the Department of Surgery (Clinical Professor, 1963-2009) but continues to teach bioethics and medical history in the medical school and Yale College (Freshman Seminars). He is the author of hundreds of articles in the medical and public press and has written 12 books, one of which – How We Die, 1994 – won the National Book Award, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and has been translated into 29 languages. He has been elected to numerous honorary societies, and was the recipient of the 2011 Jonathan Rhoads Gold Medal of the American Philosophical Society, for “Distinguished Service to Medicine.” He has been an Associate Fellow of Branford College for some three decades.
